Nothing beats the freedom of hitting the open road for a long weekend escape—especially when you have the perfect home-on-wheels to take you there.  Victoria is packed with incredible destinations, from coastal hideaways to scenic mountain retreats, making it the ideal playground for caravan travellers.

Whether you're looking for a relaxing beachside break, an adventure in nature, or a charming country town to explore, we’ve rounded up the top long weekend getaway spots in Victoria.

1. GREAT OCEAN ROAD

How could we possibly compile a list of the "Top 5 Long Weekend Getaway Destinations in Victoria" without including Australia's most iconic road trip location? We couldn't - and that's exactly why it's earned our top spot. Located just 3 hours from Melbourne, the infamous coastal drive has so much to explore that we recommend setting aside at least a couple of days just to scratch the surface (perfect for that long weekend).

The Great Ocean Road is a dream route for caravan travellers, offering stunning coastal scenery, iconic landmarks, and plenty of caravan-friendly stops. Must-see attractions include the breathtaking Twelve Apostles, where towering limestone stacks rise dramatically from the ocean; the lush rainforests and waterfalls of Great Otway National Park; and the charming seaside towns like Lorne and Apollo Bay, perfect for a relaxing stopover.  With ample scenic caravan parks to choose from, this road trip is an unforgettable adventure.

2. DANDENONG RANGES & THE YARRA VALLEY

Famous amongst foodies and footsore travellers alike, a visit to the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley is like stepping into a world of lush forests, beautiful gardens, and top-notch wineries. In the Dandenong's, you can wander through the majestic Sherbrooke Forest, hop on the charming Puffing Billy Railway, and meander through the delightful Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens.

After a day exploring the trails, steer your caravan towards the Yarra Valley and unwind with a glass of the region's renowned wine and gourmet food. If you're looking for more to fill your long weekend, there are plenty of local art galleries and wineries to explore, all within a 2-hour drive from Melbourne CBD.

3. GREAT ALPINE ROAD

We might be biased, but we think the Great Alpine Road drive is one of the best - and why wouldn't we? This iconic route spans over 300km and winds through the stunning High Country, showcasing breathtaking mountain views, quaint villages, and a host of exciting attractions. Essential stops include Bright, a lively town celebrated for its autumn hues, gourmet cuisine, and adventure sports. Further along, Mount Hotham becomes a winter wonderland for skiers and snowboarders, while in summer, it turns into a paradise for hikers and cyclists. Omeo, a historic gold rush town, provides a peek into the past with its heritage buildings and local museums.

We recommend staying at the likes of the Bright Riverside Holiday Park, Dinner Plain Alpine Village, and the secluded camping areas along the Tambo River.  Whichever option you choose, the Great Alpine Road offers an unforgettable road trip experience, and (hopefully) will keep you coming back for more.

Just don't forget to pop in and say hi to us on your way through!

4. WILSON'S PROMONTORY

Our team is divided when it comes to the best things to do in Wilson's Prom; is it hiking Mt Oberon, snorkelling and diving in crystal-clear water, spotting native animals, or capturing the best angle of those soaring granite cliffs?

Whether you're a beach go-er, mountain climber, nature photographer, or simply seeking adventure, then Victoria's largest coastal wilderness area has something for you! Tidal River Campground is the main site for caravaners, offering powered and unpowered spots close to the park’s best attractions.

5. GRAMPIANS NATIONAL PARK

Head west from Melbourne and in 3 hours you will reach the deep valleys, panoramic sunset views, and abundant hiking trails of the Grampians. Base yourself at Halls Gap to explore the natural beauty on foot, or unhitch the caravan and do a DIY tour of the area's many breweries and wineries.

Travellers can stay at Halls Gap Caravan Park or other nearby campgrounds, providing easy access to the park’s highlights. Visitors can hike to iconic lookouts like The Pinnacle or Mackenzie Falls, explore ancient rock art sites, and spot native wildlife such as kangaroos and emus. Rock climbing, scenic drives, and wildflower spotting in spring make the Grampians a must-visit destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike.
